Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment

Berlin is a green metropolis: With clean water, numerous parks and green areas, good air quality and liveable, low-noise surroundings compared to other major cities.

Berlin has already achieved much – and still has much to do. Preserving what has been accomplished to date and facing the challenges ahead: The Senate Department for Urban Development and the Environment is working hard to achieve this aim.

Doing so, climate protection represents the challenge for its environmental policy. And the guiding principle for this policy is the sustainable development of an intact urban environment. This covers a range of areas, from waste management through to water protection. Overall, Berlin has the ability to be an ecological model city. And this is also what makes living and working in the city so uniquely attractive.

Berlin's Climate Protection Policy
Climate protection is a global challenge – yet we have to face it on a local level. Berlin has set itself very ambitious goals here: By 2020 we want to save at least 40 percent of our CO2 emissions compared to 1990. This can only be achieved when the energy consumption in buildings is permanently reduced, Berlin structures its energy supply in line with the criteria for sustainability and takes timely measures to adapt to the impacts of climate change. Everyone – the politicians, the Berlin Senate administrative authority, the companies and the residents of Berlin – are all called upon to contribute to the urgently needed changes required for this. With its wide-ranging climate protection policy for Berlin, the Federal State (Land) of Berlin is fulfilling its responsibility for the future of the generations to come in this city and in its European and global neighbours as well.
